Yep, I’m about to be that person. You know the kind. They say they’re all about one thing, one true love – for me, fashion – and then they date someone new, or get a cat, or have a baby and suddenly there’s not as much room for you in their life.

I have been an adult for coming on eighteen years so I feel like my body has had plenty of time to settle in and be what it is. I’ve be fortunate to not have any surgeries, significant illnesses, or put my body through childbirth – unless my own nearly 36 years ago counts? It doesn’t.

Growing up in rural Saskatchewan, the TLC show “What Not to Wear” gave high-school-me some solid hope. Someday I could get to a city and turn into the adult I wanted to be who dressed the way I wanted.

When someone asks me what fashion or style mistakes I’ve made in the past, I usually comment on wishing I bought things I didn’t – especially in this flexible retail world of doing a simple return if one changes their mind – instead of buying something. I do, however feel regret for things I have worn.

As vaccinations continue to go into arms and spaces open up in Alberta, I’m actually starting to think about getting together with people, in public, and possibly indoors for the first time in a very long time. But what shall I wear?

Smack dab in the middle of June I hope you are all thinking two things: Yay it’s Pride Month and get me into summer clothing. Throw on an oversize white dress shirt or a loose fit, brightly coloured dress and you’re there. Badda boom badda bing.

It’s been a hard go. But like most hard things, it’e getting better with time. My spirits keep rising as more and more folks are eligible to get their vaccines. And guess what, it’s my turn. Stab me silly, Alberta Health Services. I’ve finally got somewhere to go so you bet your stilettos I’m getting all dressed up.

Every day we are bombarded with mixed messages: “hustle” “no one will do it for you” “you better work” while at the same time “no job is worth your happiness” “toxic positivity is real” and the more general, “take care.” The confusion is overwhelming. Cue Adam Lambert’s anthem, “What do you want from me?”

As a shopper, stylist, and wardrobe speaker I often get asked, “What trends do you love? How about one you don’t love?” I can rattle off more “hates” faster than an auctioneer can try and sell cattle. But that’s so negative, no?
