It’s the most wonderful time of the year… MET Gala! Readers, you know pumped up this night is for fashion lovers like me. It’s the most fashiony-fashion night on the entire fashion calendar. The event is the kick off fundraiser for the MET’s Costume Institute. It’s a fantastical night full of celebrities, fashion, and fighting over the choices of the first two.

People are often surprised that my curiosity in fashion extends past the runway. Specifically, when I chat to people about sports team’s mascots, names, and jerseys, they often say that they didn’t consider team uniform’s a part of fashion. "Why not?" I ask. While I personally don’t find wearing althetica when not being athletic chic, I will not deny or discount how mega the sector is for the economy.

This week marks a milestone: 150 fashion and style posts on “More to It.”  Encouraging others to confidently express their true selves in what they wear so they can live a big life is my goal, the only goal really. For my clients, and me that means aligning what your wear with who you are (and want to be).Clothing that fits and flatters you is just the start.

There’s nothing quite like spring time to inspire a tidy up and refresh of your closet. Spring cleaning is one of the most wonderful times of the year for me. The days are getting longer, the buds are starting to get their bud on, and people are out working on their yards. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh. I can hear birds a-tweet-tweeting right now.

Business of Fashion broke the news Monday that Jenna Lyons, long-time creative force at J.Crew, is stepping down. We have her to thank for spicing up prep basics, teaching followers new ways to style old things, and for her allegiance to donning kickass eyewear.

Raise your hand if you have had to abide by a dress code? Was it during your school years? Perhaps it was while working retail or serving job? How about during a stint in corporate Calgary? All three? Me too. The recent waves made by United Airlines on Sunday denying boarding to “pass travellers” wearing leggings have people in a tizzy. For it? Against it? Haven’t heard of it?

Simons – the Quebec-based department store - just opened in Calgary. Thoughts, fashion friends? Many clients and loved ones share with me how overwhelmed the get in a department store. It appears that anxiety is exasperated when it is a discount department store such as Saks Off 5th or Winners. “There’s too much clutter,” “Everything is jammed in there,” “It’s a pig sty,” are some of the common comments. All true.

Oh the mall. What a great thing. Gathering a whole schwack of stores in one location, paired with amenities such as services, restaurants, and entertainment is an easy way to attract many people. There’s something for everyone: shopping, movie theatres, kid play zones, comfy chairs, and maybe even your dentist.

Late in the winter a weekend get away to California can help reset the mind. It helps too, when you check back in with Calgary weather and it’s snowing. Ha! And cold. Oh no. There’s no denying it; it’s still winter here. Deep inhale. Deeper exhale. Oh vacations.California is laid back. California is uptight. Wait, what?

The major awards shows of the season wrapped up on Sunday night in an astonishing fashion. We are all now aware of the Academy Awards Best Picture envelope mix-up that eventually got straightened out and granted to the Moonlight team. Phew. Drama aside, my favourite part of the night, of course, was what the stars wore.

The fashion industry has made strides in inclusivity and showcasing diversity over the past few years. There has been a big push from inside and outside the industry to do better. To show more of a spectrum of the beautiful types – all types – of people that can showcase clothes.

I have devoted my life to the thought that if you prepare, work hard enough, and show up looking the part, the rest will fall into place. After Sunday night’s Grammys I am a bit shook up. Yet as I am learning more and more, I shouldn’t be.
