Check out this 2019, fashion friends. Isn’t she gorgeous already? I know it hasn’t even been a haute couture minute just yet – we’re on day two - but I can’t shake the feeling of something on the horizon and the ripe opportunity to renew.

A quick look back on the New Year’s origin story and I feel like I know a tiny bit more. Cliff Notes version is something like this: we’ve been restarting once a year at a specific time – that has varied from late fall to the first signs of spring – depending on your culture or religion. A Yearly refresh is an old as modern time. Well, 5,000 years or so. No matter where you live or what you believe this ritual is a time for refreshing or re-solidifying. Basically, we make new commitments or reaffirm what is already there.

I tend to make resolutions. I love the opportunity to shed of my invisible snake skin and start anew. Often I’ll try and zone in on a specific thing – curb spending, reduce toxins, increase exercise – all in a hope of evolving into a better version of myself. I find that focusing on one element keeps me on track longer. When I set something too vague like “be healthier” the lack of specifics work against me.

Enough about me, what are you trying this year? Something for your insides or outsides? I think that no matter where you start – inside or outside - there will be benefits that infiltrate the other. For example, if your take care of your mental health, over time you may be feeling yourself and put on an outfit that is more fabulous than you typically would choose. That day you’ll likely walk around with an extra bounce in your step. Alternatively, if you push yourself to choose clothing that communicates who you are as an individual and what you want to say, when you’re out and about and you may get a nod or verbal compliment that echoes your intended sentiment. The glorious result can include your self-confidence getting a bit of a glow up. Good for you.

If you’re looking for sartorial ideas on what to possibly focus on this new year, here are a few ideas that could inspire resolutions.

Put yourself on a week-long style diet.

Tidy up your wardrobe and give it a new life long after you.

Push your own comfort zone by dressing differently.

Reject the notion that putting in effort is somehow not cool.

Curb your spending and wear what you already own.

Ask yourself these four questions and your style will improve.

Practice pack for that trip you have months from now.

Dig deep and try and figure out who you are and how you want to be seen.

Simply put, plan a tiny bit and try something. Anything. You will learn something about yourself along the way and will carry that new knowledge with you. For some, your fashion resolution will last a few weeks. Others it may last the whole year. Regardless of the longevity, I trust that it will be worth it.
