Remembrance Day Review: Posts From the Archive and More to Learn

Over the years, with a heavy heart, I’ve posted some thoughts on Remembrance Day. What I believe why it is important to remember and take pause each year. I need to look back and try to learn more for me to move forward.

While this list below is not exhaustive by any means, there is some good in here.

An OG… The Symbolism of a Poppy

The thing about the poppy is that it says so much in a rather simple emblem. The flash of red affixed above one’s heart is a quick symbol of our national spirit, the sentiment and our compassion. We say a lot by merely donning the poppy.

Thinking about the garments themselves… Remembering War Heroes Through Service Uniforms

As I thought about the history, I got to thinking about the uniforms of the effort. Who made them? How many were made? And what impact on fashion did it leave?

Companies behaving badly, ooooof… Why Was Whole Foods Doing the Worst Targeting Remembrance Day Poppies?

When I first heard the headline that Whole Foods was banning all employees – including staffers above the 51st parallel – from wearing poppies this year I was a bit confused. “Can’t wear a poppy at work?” I asked out loud to the ether. Why?

Part of grieving is knowing the truth. We need to know the whole history. I have so much more to learn. I’m going to start with these Indigenous Veterans articles and review the Indian Act history and implications.

And bringing back my focus to the human lives at stake… Remembrance Day Stirs Emotions

I think about the soldiers. What would it be like to fight for your country against vile abhorrence? What would it be like to listen and perform every direction the superior asked of you? What would it be like to lose a friend at war? What about the scarce - but sometimes true - reality of recognizing a mate from back home across the enemy lines? They too, would have been called to fight for their country, likely with partial information on what they were fighting for. My heart aches for them.

What will you remember on the 11 day of November?
