Star Wars Style

We are all waiting… for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Am I right? Of course, the holiday season is too in it’s final surge - like the movie promotions - before the world slows down for a few, quiet and sweet days. But this year it feels different. There’s something special in the air. At the very least it feel different to me. Something is about to wake us up.

Disclosure: Multiple Star Wars puns will be made. You’ve been fair warned.

What I think the source of the extra buzz is Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Nothing like The Force to bring all walks of life together. “Freaks,” “geeks,” and “regular Joe’s and Jane’s” unite! Star Wars will not be denied your attention.

I am so down. Down with the costumes, down with the promotional tour – what a spectacular opportunity to dress with intention - the spinoff merchandise, and I’m R2-D2 to get down with the casting of the actors. Here are my highlights.

The costume design, led by Michael Kaplan a frequent collaborator with director J.J. Abrams, took visual to another level. For example, Kaplan made a concerted effort to further distinguish the Empire and the Rebels warring uniforms in different colour pallets and fabrics. I marvel at the talent and imagination of the makeup and hair team that finishes the looks. It sure takes me far, far away.

The Star Wars merchandise is everywhere. You cannot step into a mall, grocery store or go online without the bombardment of Jedi options. Of course there are the replicas and costumes you’d expect, but there are some other branded spinoffs that may surprise you. Star Wars and Cover Girl have a limited edition collection of some pretty solid nude hues and retro inspired icy hues (without the 70s-ick). That’s a holiday miracle if I ever knew one. Remember Uggs? Yeah, you can get a Star Wars version as promoted on their official website Holiday Gift Guide. Whatever your consumer habits please know it’s big, BIG business. The Hollywood Reporter shares that analysts expect $5 billion in sales in the first year alone. What a force, indeed.

Moving on, have you seen the fashion feast for your eyes on the promotional tour? It’s no surprise that Lupita Nyong’o is bringing the style steeze.  Oscar Issac a consummate professional is wearing the shit of out leather jackets, like this. Relative newcomer John Boyega is holding his own. Last but not least, Daisy Ridley is bringing her own taste to the forefront of the whirlwind worldwide promotion tour.

The fashion is great. How they use that fashion to create their personal style, each unique, is fantastic. All that said, what’s even more fantastic is that young people all over the world are getting to see these diverse stars.

"There is an entire segment of children who are dying to see themselves reflected in movies." - Glynnis Macnicol, contributing writer, Elle

We get to foster a new generation that will idolize these actors. There is a new Star Wars generation that is so, so now. We are reflecting the ethnically diverse and beautiful world back to viewers and giving them a 2015 (finally) perspective.

There are no feelings of war from me. Just giddy excitement to be taken to a galaxy far, far away.
